In the lead-up to #APTLD84 how about paying a visit to one of the most thrilling and innovative countries on the planet? Right, we are talking Saudi Arabia and its ccTLD known as .SA
.SA is managed by the Saudi Network Information Center (SaudiNIC). In addition to being responsible for the administration of.SA, it manages the nation’s IDN ccTLD (.السعودية). This includes the operation of the Saudi DNS root servers and the registry services under Saudi TLDs . SaudiNIC was managed and operated by King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) since 1995. By the end of 2006 the task of operating SaudiNIC moved to the Communications, Space & Technology Commission (CST).
The mission of SaudiNIC is to provide an equitable, just and competent technical and administrative management of domain name registrations for Internet community in Saudi Arabia.
Its main tasks include:
Setting up policies regulating domain name registrations
Managing and supervising Accredited Registrars
Providing direct registrations under both .SA and .السعودية
Maintain the Domain names records and provide Whois services
Lead the effort toward fully Arabic domain names
Coordinating with other GCC, Arab, and International ccTLDs.
Participating in international events supervised by ICANN, RIPE, ISOC, and WIPO.
Registrations in .SA are open for registrants having Saudi presence, a local representative, or trademark registered in Saudi Arabia. Registrants must show legal papers verifying their identity to register a domain.
Registrations are within these second-level categories: com.sa for commercial entities and registered trademarks; edu.sa – educational institutions; sch.sa – elementary and secondary schools; med.sa -health services (hospitals, clinics, etc.); gov.sa: – governmental entities; net.sa- Internet-related services (ISPs, web hosting, portal sites, etc.); org.sa -non-profit organizations; pub.sa -entities or individuals that do not fit in other categories, including personal names.
Earlier this year, the .SA registry has published a comprehensive report on the history of .SA covering the period  from the onset and until 2022 https://www.cst.gov.sa/ar/indicators/PublishingImages/Pages/saudi_domain/_22تقرير_أسماء_النطاقات_السعودية.pdf

In the lead-up to #APTLD84, we are visiting Qatar to check on the nation’s .QA ccTLD and ist registry
.QA has been the Internet country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Qatar since 1996 and it is managed by the Communications Regulatory Authority (CRA), the communications regulator of the State of Qatar established by virtue of the Emiri Decree 42 of 2014. CRA regulates the telecommunications and information technology sector, postal sector and access to digital media. CRA promotes and supports an open and competitive information and communications technology (ICT) sector that provides advanced, innovative, and reliable communications services. Balancing consumers’ rights and service providers’ needs is at the heart of what CRA does.
Qatar domains available through approved registrars are: .qa, .com.qa, .net.qa, .name.qa and Arabic قطر. the latter of which is represented as .xn--wgbl6a in Punycode and are open for international registrants
The domains that are registered directly from the Qatar Domains Registry are : .gov.qa, .mil.qa, .org.qa, .edu.qa and .sch.qa.
TRA has an audacious vision of Qatar contributing to the rise of a smart connected nation, enabled through effective and innovative ICT and postal regulation.
Interesting facts:
Football fans should be grateful to TRA for empowering the recent World Cup’s digital platforms
The .QA registry is the only one in Middle East and one of few in the Asia Pacific led by a female – Ms. Noora Al Meraizeeq, a seasoned industry professional, has been around for quite a while to lead the .QA team to replace Mohamed El Bashir who now works for ICANN.

The new APTLD Member Working Group held ist inaugural session: https://aptld.org/about/newsroom/18814/

In the lead-up to #APTLD84, our today’s post is about .PW. While a ccTLD for a tiny pacific island of Palau, a brand name space, .PW stands for a short of “Professional Web” and is around to provide users with short, generic and first-choice domain names that establish their professional identity online.
Whether you’re a Doctor, Lawyer, Blogger, Consultant, Musician, Artist or Internet professional, looking to establish a professional online presence – .PW is for you!
Anyone from anywhere across the globe can register a .PW domain name. So you can go local with a .PW domain name in the language of your choice – at .PW, IDNs supported in Chinese, Japanese, Arabic, Hebrew, Spanish, Russian, Turkish and many more.
The registrations process is the simplest in the industry and there are absolutely NO RESTRICTIONS, or documents required to register a .PW name. BUT! It does not mean that .PW is ignorant of IPRs and brandowners/trademark holders’ legitimate rights- in fact, back in 2013 the .pw Registry became the first TLD to adopt the Uniform Rapid Suspension (URS) rights protection mechanism from ICANN to ensure a highly effective, quick and inexpensive mechanism to eliminate names that violate their trademarks.
