The 77th APTLD Members Meeting and AGM took place in Melbourne, Australia, on 20 and 21 February 2020. Hosted by auDA, the .AU ccTLD operator, the Meeting has become the biggest APTLD gathering so far, attracting 130 Members’ representatives and guests representing AP* organizations and the global domain names industry, as well as the Government of Australia.
The path to the Meeting’s success was particularly challenging due to adverse effects of bushfires in Australia and the global coronavirus outbreak, which affected some Members’ availability for the Meeting; yet, both the host and the APTLD community displayed their commitment to holding the Meeting notwithstanding. Strong support of the Meeting was received from the corporate sector: in addition to auDA, APTLD Members auDA, Afilias and Neustar, as well as non-Members CentralNic and VentraIP proved very keen to sponsor the Meeting.
APTLD77 was traditionally preceded by 2 days of training. Delivered by Afilias and APTLD in association with a local expert, the first day focused on GR and risk management topics; the second day featured the .LK team to share their rich expertise in the cybersecurity area. The attendance on both days was record-breaking, too.
As many as 22 APTLD Ordinary Members and 9 Associate Members made it to APTLD77. Thanks to auDA’s targeted grant, APTLD has managed to ensure the participation in the Meeting of Pacific Islands’ ccTLD registries through the use of fellowships.
The Meeting was held in the traditional two-track mode boasting a total of 13 sessions and over 50 panelists and presenters, including a number of remote ones, to cover the administrative, policy, technical, and security areas, as well as Internet Governance.
APTLD, in cooperation with Neustar, introduced an innovative format of holding an off-site workshop on cybersecurity; in addition, an idea wall was introduced to participants to share their thoughts about both the APTLD’s future and to contribute to the prospective APTLD78 agenda.
auDA as the Meeting host spared no effort to ensure APTLD77 was a huge success. The Gala night and the traditional post-Meeting networking event proved equally successful and drew a big number of participants sharing the spirit of inclusivity and friendly cooperation across the Membership.
At the opening, APTLD signed an MoU with the Pacific Islands Chapter of ISOC, which should allow both organizations to join forces in pursuing their missions across the Southern Pacific area.
At the closure of the Meeting, TWNIC unveiled the destination and dates of APTLD78, that is, Taipei, 3-4 September 2020. Also, traditionally, the APTLD78 website - http://aptld78.tw/ - was unveiled, with draft Meeting agenda to be uploaded shortly after a traditional review and comments period.
At the ensuing Annual General Meeting, Members approved the re-elected Board member Mr. Gihan Dias (.LK), and elected Board Members Mr. Brent Carey (.NZ), Mr. Erhan Karabardak (.PG) and Mr. Yudho Giri Sucahyo (.ID). The community thanked Mr. Hasnul Fadhly B. Hasan for his service on the APTLD Board. The Members also received the APTLD Chair update, approved the 2019 Accounts, selected the APTLD auditor, and outlined the 2020 budget.
Subsequently, in its meeting held after AGM, the APTLD Board re-elected Ms. Ai-chin Lu (.TW) as the APTLD Board Chair, Mr. Gihan Dias (.LK) –as the Vice Chair, Mr, Qiang Li (.CN)- as the Treasurer, and Mr. Erhan Karabardak (.PG) as the Secretary.
APTLD would like to thank auDA, Afilias Australia, Neustar Inc, CentralNic PLC, and VentraIP for co-sponsoring APTLD77.
