In the lead-up to the 25th anniversary of APTLD, today, we proudly feature Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited, the manager of .BD and the nation’s IDN. BTCL or Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited is the largest telecommunications company in Bangladesh.
The company was founded as the Bangladesh Telegraph & Telephone Board (BTTB) following Bangladesh’s independence in 1971. On July 1, 2008 the BTTB became a public limited company and was renamed as BTCL.
Interesting facts:
The domain managent team is just a tiny unit at the company with 12,636 officials and staff (as of 2007).
BTCL provides land-line telephone services in Bangladesh’s urban areas, including domestic long-distance calling and international services as well as internet services. In 2004, the Bangladesh Government issued a number of PSTN licenses to private companies, but they were barred from providing services in the lucrative Dhaka market (which accounts for the majority of the nationwide market). The monopoly held by BTCL was broken when other operators started to receive licenses from 2007.
BTCL is one of very few APTLD Members boasting a satellite under management! Bangabandhu 1 (BD-1), the first geostationary communications satellite of Bangladesh, was developed by the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC). The satellite was launched into geostationary earth orbit (GEO) in May 2018. Located at 119.1°E longitude orbital position, Bangabandhu 1 provides broadcasting and telecommunication services to rural areas in Bangladesh. It also supports profitable services, including direct-to-home (DTH) services.
It offers Ku-band and C-band services across Bangladesh and its territorial waters of the Bay of Bengal, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, and Indonesia.
The satellite enables the nation to save approximately BDT1.08bn ($14m) spent on satellite rents a year. BTRC also plans to launch follow-on series of BD-2 and BD-3 satellites in phases.
