The Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA): vox populi! pictures
In the lead-up to #APTLD84, today we are proud to present HKIRC- a not-for-profit organization that is committed to providing, and supervising the provision of .HK and .香港 Internet domain names registration, resolution and related services in an uninterrupted, effective, customer-centric and sustainable manner. In addition, HKIRC promotes Hong Kong as an inclusive, secure, innovative and international city for the Internet and encourages the use of Internet and the related technologies.
Historically, from its inception in 1990 until 2002, the domain was administered by the Joint University Computer Centre. It was in 2002 that through a “Memorandum of Understanding” with the Hong Kong government, HKIRC took over the administration of .HK.
HKIRC is committed to serve the Internet community of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, as well as the global Internet community, in relation to the administration of domain names under the .HKand .香港 country-code top-level domains.
Interesting facts:
HKIRC is a membership-based organization, with Members falling under 2 classes:
a) Supply class: ISPs, Registrars, etc. and
b) Demand: all other entities and private individuals.
An important membership eligibility qualification is, all Members must maintain a valid registration of one or more Internet domain names under the .hk ccTLD.
The Hong Kong Domain Name Registration Corporation Limited (HKDNR), the wholly owned subsidiary of HKIRC, is responsible for the day-to-day management of the registration service for specific .HK domain names and generic .HK domain names (e.g., www.myname.hk).
.HK domain names can be registered at both the second and third level.
HKIRC, together with InternetNZ, is an absolute champion at APTLD by the number of times its representatives held the Board Chair position (twice), and the one and only member whose representative, Mr. Jonathan Shea, did it twice.
Jonathan is expected to join the community in Seoul to take part in the 25th anniversary festivities.
The UA day is looming upon us.– #ICANN and Universal Acceptance Steering Group – UASG invite the global #Internet community to participate in the first-ever UA Day! In the lead-up to #APTLD84, our today’s story is about .CX
.CX is the ccTLD for Christmas Island, a tiny spot in the Pacific near Australia. It is administered by the Christmas Island Internet Administration under an MoU with the Government of Australia, and it is done through the Christmas Island Domain Administration Limited. Interestingly, the Christmas Island Internet Administration is a community-owned non-profit company which also provides Internet service to the island’s residents. .CX is a member of the Council of Country Code Administrators, a group of country-code domains making use of common registry and/or dispute resolution services, which is known globally as COCCA and our long-standing colleagues and friend Garth Miller is listed as its Administrative Contact.
An interesting fact: .CX was added to the root in April 1997, so it celebrated its 25th anniversary a year ago, thus being 1 year older than APTLD.
In the lead-up to #APTLD84, we continue sharing insights into, and interesting facts about, our Members, and today, it is .CN that comes to the focus of our attention.
In December 2022, the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) published its 50th Statistical Report on China’s Internet Development. The Report details that the number of “netizens” in China reached 1.05 billion in June 2022, a figure that represents a 74.4% market penetration, with 99.6% of users accessing the Internet via a mobile phone.
The Report records the total number of Chinese-registered domain names in China in June 2022 at 33.8 million and notes that fiercely rivaled by new gTLDs, .CN still comes unbeatable with stunning 17,861,269 registrations in June 2022.
Do you know that:
In addition to generic 2nd-level registrations like edu.cn : for educational institutions (usually universities and colleges), com.cn for industrial, commercial, financial enterprises and individuals, etc. , China’s all 23 provinces and a few municipalities have their 2nd-level domains, like gd.cn for Guangdong Province and bj.cn : Beijing Municipality ?
